Valorisation of water treatment sludge for lightweight aggregate production

• Water treatment sludge (WTS) is incorporated to expanded clay for LWA production. The expanding properties of are slightly reduced with WTS addition. LWAC formulated commercial similar containing WTS. can be revalorised by an industrial by-product which has recently been classified as a waste the European Commission. main goal this work valorise produce lightweight aggregates. Formulations substituting up 50 wt% were produced. physical aggregates such bloating index, density and porosity studied. introduction without properties, expandability increased from 0.32 g/cm 3 in 1.46 sludge. It shown that produced using mixtures water sludge, low substitution percentages (up 15 sludge). Aggregates further compressive strength wt.%, concentrations heavy metals metalloids, assessed through leaching tests, well below stablished limits. Two preliminary tests aggregate concrete produced: 1 was 2 7 physical, mechanical thermal found very similar. Our demonstrates feasibility suitable insulation applications.
